PRESS RELEASE

All India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA), represents the road transport sector across India. Road transporters & state associations of the road transport industry and members of AITWA. Road transportation contributes to approx 65% of the total freight movement in the country and thus is a large segment of the economy. There are approx 95 lac trucks which ply in India across segments.

Conditions in which truck drivers live is pathetic. They do not have proper sanitation facilities in many parts of the country. They sleep mostly in the truck and eat food at roadside dhabas. Medical conditions are also supressed by this community. Due to these problems, the ratio per 100 trucks has reduced to 58-60. No drivers wants to make his son a driver.

Thus this year AITWA along with regional associations across India has taken on the mantle of uplifting the lives of the truck drivers through various schemes & activities under its ambitious project - Highway Heroes, said Mr. Mahendra Arya - National President of AITWA.

AITWA is confident that, with the support of all stakeholders, the problem of reducing the number of drivers per the corresponding number of trucks will be addressed and the overall upliftment of the driver community will be seen. MORTH had recently released a greeting where it had acknowledged the work of drivers and also aligned it with Highway Heroes.

We target to reach at least 12 lac drivers in the first phase. This is the number of vehicles which ply on National Highways, said Mr. Ramesh Agarwal - Chairman Highway Heroes project.
