Transporters threaten two-day chakka jam across country from Monday. by TOI

MUMBAI: Transporters on Sunday reiterated their threat of two-day 'chakka jam' across the country from 8 am on Monday and which will last till 8 pm on Tuesday.

The transporters are protesting against hefty diesel prices, the 'utter confusion' due to varied policies under GST, and the alleged harassment from enforcement authorities on highways.

Among the demands included that the government should rationalise taxes on diesel and reduce its prices in accordance with the international market, keeping in view the price of crude oil. Diesel must be brought under the GST regime to bring uniformity of diesel pricing across the country and revision of diesel pricing should be done on quarterly basis, said Bal Malkit Singh of All India Motor Transport Congress.

Regarding GST, the transporter petition has been submitted to the government mentions : "There is utter confusion chaos and disruption due to varied policies under GST that are imposed on the road transport sector. There is 'coercive registration and unnecessary compliances' by truckers and transporters," Singh stated.

Speaking to TOI on Sunday, he said : "We are serious about the agitation as our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. The protest will be voluntarily done by transporters across the country. If citizens are inconvenienced, the government should be held responsible."
